The Aeronaut internal frame is a game-changer for travelers who want the versatility of a duffel with the comfort of a backpack. Whether you own an Aeronaut 30 or 45, adding the internal frame allows you to convert your bag into a backpack, distributing weight evenly across your shoulders and back. This guide walks you through the simple installation process and offers tips for getting the most out of your frame.

Before you begin, gather your Aeronaut bag and the internal frame kit. The frame consists of two lightweight aluminum stays and a fabric sleeve that holds them in place. You'll also need a few minutes of patience—no tools required. Let's get started.

Step 1: Prepare Your Bag

Empty your Aeronaut completely. Unzip all compartments and lay the bag flat on a clean surface. If you have any accessories like the Small Travel Tray or Everyday Cubelet, remove them to access the internal frame pocket. The frame pocket is located inside the main compartment, against the back panel. It's a long, narrow sleeve with a zipper closure.

Make sure the bag is fully unzipped so you can easily slide the frame stays into the pocket. If your bag has been packed for a while, fluff the fabric to ensure the pocket is not bunched up.

Step 2: Insert the Frame Stays

Take the two aluminum stays and hold them together. They are identical, so either stay can go into either side of the sleeve. Open the frame pocket zipper and slide one stay into the pocket, pushing it all the way to the bottom. Repeat with the second stay, placing it alongside the first. The stays should fit snugly without forcing them.

Once both stays are inserted, close the zipper. You may notice the bag begins to take a more structured shape. This is the frame working to distribute load. If the stays feel loose, double-check that they are fully seated at the bottom of the pocket.

Step 3: Attach the Backpack Straps

The Aeronaut comes with removable backpack straps. Locate the attachment points on the bottom and top of the bag. The bottom clips attach to metal D-rings near the base, and the top clips attach to loops on the shoulder strap attachment points. Snap each clip securely—you'll hear a click when they lock.

Adjust the strap length to your preference. For a comfortable carry, the bag should sit high on your back, with the top of the bag at shoulder level. If you're using the frame for the first time, start with the straps loose and tighten gradually.

  • Tip: Use the sternum strap (included with the Aeronaut) to prevent the shoulder straps from slipping off during long walks.

Step 4: Test the Fit and Adjust

Put on the bag and walk around your home. The frame should keep the bag from sagging, ensuring the weight is carried by your hips and shoulders. If the bag feels unbalanced, adjust the strap length or redistribute items inside. The frame works best when heavier items are placed closer to your back.

For added organization, consider using the Side Kick as a front pocket or attaching a Forager Cinch Bag for quick access items. The frame does not interfere with these accessories, so you can customize your setup.

Maintenance and Removal

The internal frame is designed to be left in place permanently, but you can remove it if you want to use the Aeronaut as a duffel. Simply unzip the frame pocket, pull out the stays, and store them in the included sleeve. The frame adds minimal weight (about 4 ounces) and does not affect the bag's ability to fit in overhead bins.

Clean the stays with a damp cloth if they get dirty. Avoid bending them, as this could affect their performance. With proper care, the frame will last for years of travel.

The Aeronaut internal frame is a simple yet effective upgrade that transforms your bag into a comfortable backpack for hands-free travel. Whether you're navigating airports or hiking through cities, the added support makes a noticeable difference. If you don't already own an Aeronaut, explore the Aeronaut 30 or 45 to experience this versatility firsthand.
